    Anuradapura – Ancient city

    Anuradhapura is one of the ancient kingdoms in Sri Lanka. It is religious city, which is situated North Central Province. Where the ancient place of worship are situated, is demarcated as the sacred city and is well guarded. Vijaya the traditional 1st King of Ceylon came and settled in Thambapanni or Thammenna. His ministers founded settlements, given them their own names. One such settlement was Anuradhagrama, founded by Anuradha. Anuradhagrama then acquired importance as the chief village in the area and came to be called Anuradhapura. Theravada Buddhism was introduced to Ceylon during the reign of King Dewanampiyathissa.
